1. Start May 24'
Yogalimbs has officially been kicked off. I never thought I would start my own business. This sounds so official and businesslike, but it is a fact. Since then I have been back from my trip to Nepal, the studio has been set up, a website has been launched, and many yoga classes have already been given in group and in private.
2. Custom yoga.
During my 3rd yoga- course in Pokhara, Nepal, we also received 5h yoga therapy lessons. An intro on how to use yoga very applied against discomfort. Just as you have visual arts and applied art, you can also apply yoga. Is yoga something beautiful, something fun or is it a necessity? Can yoga solve a physical or mental discomfort? Scientific research has already proven it.
Through a yoga teacher of mine I came into contact with the IAYT (international association of yoga therapists) in the USA. They also have a European side branch and so I quickly landed on the website of Theyogatherapyinstitute.org.
Very interested and a bit impulsive, I had booked a first module to see how they work.
Yoga therapy for the endocrine system and auto-immune diseases. Okay, that was immediately heavy to start with, but actually I didn't think about that at the time. It soon became clear that the training had a very medical approach. This resonated because my affinity with the human body grows as I learn.
3. Yoga therapy.
Knowledge about our nine body systems and how they are connected, what function is entrusted to whom and how they ideally work. If there is a complaint, we need to look at what is going on through the knowledge we acquire through training and by listening to the client.
Based on that, we put together a yoga session for that client.
I am a yoga therapist in training and in the meantime I have already seen a few people for a private yoga session. Stress is often one of the complaints that has an impact on something else. This way everything is intertwined and we can't help but approach the individual as a whole.
Body and mind.
For this we have 5 tools:
-Let's move.
How far can you turn your back? Even if it is only 5 cm. Bend forward, backward, left, right, what does your body tell you? Your body is always right!
- Breathing. Our primary necessity of life.
Everything starts with a first breath and ends with the last. You can do without food and drink for a few days, but we can only do without air for a few minutes before we have to breathe again.
This is an automatic body function. You can't choke yourself by holding your breath.
Nature does not allow this to protect you. But we do all have direct control over the breathing, unlike other automatic body functions, such as our heart rate. Only the range differs from person to person.
-Relaxation: conscious rest.
You lie down on a yoga mat, support yourself with pillows if you wish or you just lie on your bed. Close your eyes. A guided meditation in a comfortable position. You stick with your mind to the lesson and to the instructions I give you or don't give you.
-Visualization: 'Imagine' said John Lennon.
We have the capacity to fantasize, to imagine something. One image says more...
This is how we can imagine doom scenarios. What if this or what if that? But in this way we can also imagine scenarios of pure joy, of fun moments in your life or fictionally create an image with the elements that make you happy.
-Affirmation: Tell yourself what you want in your life, as it already is. Present tense.
(Be careful what you wish for.)
For example, your wish is: I want to feel more stable and happy.
Then say, 'I'm standing strong, I feel good'
Give yourself a compliment.
Getting a compliment is nice, everyone who has ever received one knows that. What if you've never received a compliment in your life? How would that person feel?
Be kind and say positive words to yourself even if you wouldn't immediately believe it yourself. Repeat it every day and you will act like it.
These last 3 tools are often intertwined in meditation. The ultimate goal of yoga is to sit still or lie down with awareness of your breath between body and mind.
For the average person, this is often a big challenge and that is why we start to move and breathe with the movement. This is the preparation for meditation.
I have been practicing meditation for more than a year now and I manage to sit still for 10 to 15 minutes in silence and count my breaths until I reach a hundred. I often feel impatient to continue with my day, but I believe this will benefit me in the long run.
Our brain has to process so much in an ever shorter time. It seems like time is going faster and faster. Life is going faster, not time. A 'time out' imposes itself or you can already anticipate.
So far I have finished these modules of each 50h:
*The endocrine system and auto-immune diseases.
*Trauma-Informed Yoga Therapy Module.
*The reproductive system, family dynamics and the aging process.
Up next, in September:
*The skeleton and lower backpain.
*The cardiovascular and respiratory system.
4. Pregnancy yoga: So much going on!
I ended up at Qinobi.be through a vacancy for a yoga teacher. Qinobi is a Fisiopractice short at Dampoort in Ghent. In the end I didn't get the job, but after a next email from me, a month later, they could use me to take over some pregnancy yoga classes in the summer. So now.
I was not a pregnancy yoga teacher, but I followed a training through Newnature.be and so I am a certified pregnancy yoga teacher after a 50h training.
So I'm going to replace 6 lessons in the coming weeks and I'm a partner richer.
5. Ending:
I will continue with the training and will try to keep up with my blog regularly in this way so that you stay informed of my crazy adventures:) If you have already read so far you may be interested in what yoga has to offer you?
Send me a message and we'll meet for yoga.
In Joy
Maarten
